The Proxmox backup platform

Proxmox Backup Server is a standalone solution to back up data efficiently, restore it in seconds, and reduce hours of administration thanks to simplified management.

Open source

Free software under the GNU AGPLv3 license. You can inspect the code, trust the solution, and contribute to the project.

High performance

Stack written in Rust: speed, memory efficiency, and compile-time safety, without a garbage collector.

Incremental and deduplication

Only changes between backups are sent. Deduplication reduces physical space and network impact.

ZSTD compression

High-speed Zstandard compression with a strong ratio: several gigabytes per second without sacrificing efficiency.

Encryption and integrity

AES-256-GCM encryption on the client, SHA-256 checksums, and periodic verification to detect data corruption.

Fast restore

Agile recovery of VMs, containers, individual files, or directories from the snapshot catalog.

Architecture and data protection

Client-server separation, encryption before data reaches the datastore, and tools to defend against ransomware.

Client-server model

Multiple independent hosts can use the same backup server. The client encrypts data before sending it to the datastore.

Remote synchronization

Synchronize datastores to other locations for redundancy. Only changes since the last synchronization are transferred.

Access control

Granular roles, groups, and permissions. Authentication via PAM, OpenID Connect, or the PBS authentication server.

Ransomware protection: granular access control, backup integrity verification, remote synchronization, and tape copies for a defense-in-depth strategy.

Integration with Proxmox VE

Add PBS storage on your Proxmox VE node and run backups just like any other storage destination.

  • Native integration with Proxmox VE: VM and container backups like any other storage.
  • Dirty bitmap support in QEMU for efficient incremental backups.
  • Restore individual files from a VM or container backup.
  • Live-restore: start a VM while the restore is still in progress.
  • Security via certificate fingerprint when adding PBS storage.

Centralized management

Web interface, CLI, and REST API to manage datastores, tasks, users, and restores without a dedicated administrator.

Web interface

Dashboard, datastores, file restore, task monitoring, and integrated HTML5 console.

CLI

Command line with autocompletion and man documentation for advanced tasks and automation.

REST API

Formal API with JSON Schema to integrate third-party management tools quickly.
